Leighton Wilbert Nickerson

NICKERSON, Leighton Wilbert - 76, of Wood’s Harbour passed away at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on September 3, 2012. Born February 29, 1936, he was the son of Harold and Rosie (Perry) Nickerson. Leighton was very community minded and community-involved man. He was a member of the Barrington Municipal Council. He was also a deacon of the church and a Sunday School teacher. Leighton had a great passion for fishing, but after his retirement his most loved hobby was woodworking. He was a founder of the Wood’s Harbour Fire Department, a founding member of the Wood’s Harbour ball field and a coach of the Wood’s Harbour Royals. He served on the Lobster Advisory Council and was also involved in the Fisherman’s Co-op. He was captain of one of the early draggers which lead to his ability to teach net mending skills for future generations. He was an avid woods men which involved deer and rabbit hunting and many hours in the field picking blueberries. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. He is survived by his wife Gertrude (Ross) Nickerson; sons, Garth (Doris) Nickerson, East Pubnico; Craig (Janie) Nickerson, Charlesville; Cooper (Connie) Nickerson, Waterloo, Ontario; daughter, Lana (Gary) Sears, Clark’s Harbour; brother, Sheldon (Marie) Nickerson, Wood’s Harbour; sisters, Elizabeth Trask, Barrington; Julie (Felton) Ross, Barrington; Ethel (Russell) Nickerson, Wood’s Harbour; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Aside from his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Kempton, Roger; sisters, Belle Malone and Beverly Montague. The funeral service was held Friday, September 7 at 2 p.m. at the Calvary United Baptist Church, Wood’s Harbour, Pastor Phil Williams officiating. Internment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery, Wood’s Harbour. Memorial donations may be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation.
